In that place where now is square was established village of Pašešupis which was the first time mentioned in historical resources in 1667 years. Then around square stood 24 wooden homesteads (called smokes). In the beginning of XVIII century settled in Kvietiškis count Antanas Butleris in 1736 years village reorganized to trading town of Starapolė. Soon artisans, sellers and publicans settled down in it.

After enormous fire in 1868 years in which time main part of town burnt, the square was developed by stonework buildings of classicism and neo-baroque architecture. Mentioned buildings badly damaged during the First and the Second World Wars. The square changed its name a couple of times during interwar here operated huge markets. Later the old square was expanded and reconstructed:  were built buildings of post office, universal shop "Gulbė", court house, police and municipality.

During 2009-2011 years took place reconstruction works of central town square. During that time was fixed square itself and its accesses, appeared many new architectural accents, square decorated 19 metres of height made-up monument „For Nation and Language. To mention millenium of Lithuania name” by a local sculptor Kęstutis Balčiūnas.
